I’ve been very surprised by the presentation of women in this movie in contemporary Iran. It starts with a scene where Simin, a woman in her thirties, tries to get a divorce from her husband, because she has the dream of a better life for her and her daughter in Europe. But the lawer decides that their daughter cannot go abroad without the permission of the father. So we kind of meet our idea of the oppressed woman in the Islamic world. But while watching the movie we actually see how strong the role of a woman can be in contemporary Iran. Simin and her husband belong to the middle class and a good education of their daughter is very important to them. Religious rituals or traditional behaviour aren’t really practised any more. Through unfortunate circumstances they come into conflict with another couple, which belongs to the lower class and lives a more traditional life in comparison. One misunderstanding leads to another and in the end even Simin’s daughter lost track about right and wrong.
Definitely a great movie!
